Dr. Petra Scheffer, Chief Physician (Head of Department) for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery/Hand Surgery, became the first woman in the history of Sportklinik Hellersen to take on the role of Medical Director in 2020. She had previously held the deputy position and succeeded Dr. Jürgen Hagenah in this role.
Her term of office coincided with a time of great challenges: the coronavirus pandemic placed high demands on organization, hygiene and clinical processes. With her qualifications as a doctor in charge of hygiene and her structured way of working, she guided Sportklinik Hellersen safely through this exceptional situation and ensured reliable medical care.
She was and still is an important link between the medical staff and management and is committed to finding constructive solutions for all employees - true to the motto "Team Hellersen".
Her term of office also coincided with a period in which Sportklinik Hellersen increasingly looked beyond national borders and provided important impetus for international cooperation. During this phase, pioneering partnerships were established, innovative care concepts and joint training structures were promoted and the strategic development of Sportklinik Hellersen was supported in the long term.

Dr. Tobias Schmenn takes over as medical director
Dr. Petra Scheffer will be succeeded by Dr. Tobias Schmenn. He began his professional career in 2009 at Klinikum Dortmund before gaining further experience at Helios Klinik Wuppertal. In 2012, he moved to Sportklinik Hellersen as part of his specialist training and played a key role in shaping orthopaedic care there for many years. Since 2017, he has also been responsible for sports medicine at the German Football Association and currently looks after the German women's national team.
In 2024, Dr. Tobias Schmenn expanded his expertise at the Prävent Centrum Dortmund in the field of outpatient care before returning to the sports clinic as Medical Operations Coordinator. In this role, he connects central medical interfaces, coordinates processes and ensures smooth interaction between patient care and surgical procedures. He is therefore ideally qualified for his new role as Medical Director.

New impetus at the top of medicine
The Medical Director bears overall medical responsibility at Sportklinik Hellersen, ensures high standards of quality and hygiene and continuously develops clinical processes. As the link between doctors, nursing staff, administration and the Management Board, he ensures that medical and organizational processes are closely interlinked. He also represents the interests of the medical profession and plays a key role in shaping the strategic development of the clinic.
CEO Dirk Burghaus underlines the importance of the new Medical Director for the future direction of the specialist clinic: "With Dr. Tobias Schmenn, a colleague who has been associated with Sportklinik Hellersen professionally, personally and structurally for many years is taking over as Medical Director. As the team doctor for the DFB women's team, he is also closely involved in sport, as is the clinic. He combines medical expertise with a keen understanding of processes, teamwork and sporting requirements. This combination is invaluable for this role."
